Payment Gateway
How a Payment Gateway works
Customer Initiates Payment: The process begins when a customer decides to make a purchase and enters their payment information on the merchant’s website or swipes their card at a point of sale (POS) terminal.
Encryption and Transmission: The payment gateway encrypts the transaction information to safeguard it from potential breaches and sends it to the payment processor.
Authorisation Request: The payment processor forwards the encrypted information to the respective card association (like Visa or MasterCard), which then communicates with the customer’s issuing bank for authorization.
Approval or Decline: The issuing bank checks for sufficient funds or credit and performs fraud checks before approving or declining the transaction. This decision is communicated back through the card association and payment processor to the payment gateway.
Transaction Completion: The payment gateway sends the transaction response to the merchant’s website or POS system. If approved, the sale is completed, and both the customer and merchant receive a confirmation.
